Turkey Decoys

Why You Need a Turkey Decoy?

All the reasons why turkey decoys are a must for your hunting gear would make a long and detailed list. Using turkey decoys is an old, yet deadly effective way of trapping turkeys. For starters, they entice gobblers and bring them to a certain location so that the hunter can easily shoot them, even with a shotgun. However, if you don’t want to keep it close, then you might want to have a look at our crossbow collection as well.

Secondly, they divert the turkey’s attention away from the hunter. When placed correctly, it can work wonders as the hunter won’t be on a wild goose chase.

While buying a turkey decoy for your next hunting trip, it’s better to spare a thought for the types of turkey decoys to make sure you buy the right one that suits your needs. Here are a few widely used types of turkey decoys.

Inflatable Turkey Decoys

As the name suggests, inflatable turkey decoys are those turkey decoys that are filled with air before use. Predictably then, they weigh next to nothing. It goes without saying that you’d be at your wits’ end hauling the full-sized bulky turkey decoy up and down the mountains. If you’re an amateur huntsman who wants a lightweight turkey decoy and is not much concerned about the looks of the decoy, then you can’t go wrong with the inflatable turkey decoy. As a cherry on the cake, these turkey decoys are easy to store as well.

Solid Turkey Decoys

Solid decoys are for avid hunters who are not willing to compromise on the looks of their turkey decoy. However, the elephant in the room here is that they are quite cumbersome. Solid turkey decoys are a great choice for eager beavers too, who can't afford to waste an awful lot of time setting up the inflatable turkey decoy. If you intend to go hunting in a hilly area, then these turkey decoys are a no-no for you.

Motion Turkey Decoys

Motion turkey decoys are a relatively new type of turkey decoys. Amongst all the types, these turkey decoys are the most realistic ones. However, they must be placed well because turkeys are quick to notice the changed postures of other birds and animals. If they notice any unusual movement, chances are that they will shy away. But bear in mind that they are a bit pricier than other turkey decoys.

How to Choose the Right Turkey Decoy?

As it stands, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind before buying a turkey decoy.

  1. The first consideration is your hunting location. When it comes to hunting in an open field, you can go for solid or motion turkey decoy. But if you are going to hunt in a hilly area, an inflatable turkey decoy is the best option for you.
  2. Go for the hen and jake turkey decoys combo if you can afford it. It can dramatically boost your chances of inviting turkeys to an easily accessible shooting position. Jake will attract the hens and won’t intimidate its subordinates either. The same goes for a hen.
