If you are a hunter like me and looking for an electric bike for hunting to add to your gear list, where do you start? Which bike, which brand? Do I need a 1000w mid-drive or all-wheel drive e-bike? Do you have all these questions? Luckily we've been in the hunting business long enough to witness electric bikes burst into the scene. We own several and we sold many to give you our honest opinion.
Choosing the right electric hunting bike can depend on several factors. We personally tested them, took them on hunts, casual rides, and even rough rides, and we think there are a few things to look at when choosing an electric bike for hunting.
Here are a few things to consider before buying an electric hunting bike
Power and Range. Look for a hunting bike with sufficient power and range to make sure your trip is successful. Consider the terrain you'll cover, the weight you'll be carrying, and the distance you plan to travel. Opt for a bike with a powerful motor and a long-lasting battery to ensure you don't run out of power during your hunting trips.
- Motor Power: You want the best hunting bike with a motor that provides enough power. Higher-wattage motors generally offer more power, allowing you to tackle steep inclines and difficult terrain more easily. I suggest going for no less than 1000w.
- Battery Capacity: Consider the battery capacity and its impact on range. A larger capacity battery will allow for longer rides without needing a recharge. Look for ebikes with removable batteries for convenience. I have an extra battery always with me, consider buying one as it will be an excellent investment.
- Range Estimation: Manufacturers often provide estimated miles on a single charge based on certain conditions. Keep in mind that the range can vary depending on factors like rider weight, terrain, assistance level, and speed. Consider these factors when assessing the ebike's range. I noticed that every year, bikes get more and more juice on their batteries, which is great.
Weight Capacity. Know the bike's weight capacity to ensure it can handle your body weight and any additional gear or equipment you'll be carrying. A sturdy and durable frame is essential, especially if you plan to transport hunting gear or game.
- Rider Weight: Ensure that the electric hunting bike can support your weight comfortably. Speaking of comfort, consider a premium suspension Seatpost for the best comfort. Check the manufacturer's specifications for the maximum weight capacity of the bike.
- Gear and Equipment: If you plan to carry hunting gear or a game, factor in the additional weight. I use front and rear racks which is awesome, also most brands have deer trailers, or cargo trailers available. The one-wheel trailer does the trick for me.
Terrain Adaptability. Will you be riding on, muddy trails, rocky terrain, or steep hills? Look for an electric hunting bike with appropriate air fork suspension, tires with good traction, and sturdy construction to handle various terrains.
- Suspension: Look for an electric hunting bike with a suspension system that suits your terrain. Full-suspension bikes are the best. With front and rear suspensions, they provide better shock absorption on rough terrains. Most of the hunting bikes have front suspension only, which can be suitable for less challenging terrains.
- Tires: In my opinion, the best electric bikes come with Maxxis Minion tires for more stability on uneven surfaces and it also has the best protection from punctures.
- Frame Construction: in 2023 hunting bike has to be built from High-Grade Aluminum Alloy or carbon fiber. Don't settle for less.
Electric Bikes For Hunting This Season
Noise Level. One advantage of electric hunting bikes is their quietness, which can help you approach game animals stealthily. Ensure that the electric bike you choose operates quietly, minimizing any noise that could scare off wildlife.
- Brushless Motor: It's a rare thing to find a motor with brushes, but keep that in mind. Electric hunting bikes with brushless motors tend to be quieter compared to brushed motors. Brushes make the motors less efficient and tended to wear out over time.
- Belt Drive System: Some bikes use a belt drive system instead of a traditional chain. Belt drives are known for their quiet operation and low maintenance, minimizing noise while riding. Chains require less maintenance is more durable and has more power than belt systems. To be honest, the chain system is not that noisy in my opinion.
Camouflage and Accessories. Hunting bikes with camouflage patterns or additional accessories specifically designed for hunting, such as gun racks, storage compartments, or bow holders.
- Camouflage Patterns: If blending into the environment is important for your hunting trips, consider electric hunting bikes that come with camouflage patterns or have options to add camouflage accessories. I like Matte Army Green or black, but color patterns like Real Tree Excape, Kuiu Verde 2.0, or Badlands look really awesome I think, and will help you to blend in.
- Hunting-Specific Accessories: Look for accessories designed for hunting, such as gun racks, bow holders, or storage compartments for your hunting gear. These will enhance the functionality and convenience of your electric hunting bike and the hunting overall. Get the bow/crossbow/gun rack, you will thank me later. Best electric hunting bikes come with great accessories.
Comfort and Ergonomics. You want an electric bike that you feel comfortable riding and has adjustable seat height and handlebars. Test the bike if possible to ensure it suits your body size and riding preferences. If you can't test one, send us a message and we will help you to choose the right one for you. If you have an old injury or come to older age we suggest an electric hunting bike with a step-through frame.
- Riding Position: Ensure that the bike offers a comfortable riding position. Things like handlebar height, seat position, frame, and overall ergonomics to find a bike that suits your body size and riding preferences.
- Adjustable Components: Adjustable features like seat height, handlebar position, and suspension settings are really important. These allow you to customize the bike to your comfort and riding style.
Quality and Durability. Read reviews on our site about the brand and model you're considering. Look for bikes made with high-quality components and materials that can withstand rugged outdoor conditions.
- Research Brands and Models: Read reviews and gather information about the reliability and durability of different brands and models. Buy only reputable manufacturers known for producing high-quality electric hunting bikes.
- Component Quality: Well-made components like brakes, gears, and suspension is a must, trust us we learned the hard way. Reliable and well-known brands often use higher-quality components, ensuring better performance and longevity.
Price and Budget. Set a budget for your electric hunting bike and explore options within that range. Compare prices, features, and warranties to find the best value for your investment.
- Set a Budget: Determine your budget range before starting your search. This helps you narrow down your options and focus on bikes within your price range.
- Value for Money: Compare the features, specifications, and overall quality of different bikes to assess the value for money
Local Regulations. Familiarize yourself with local regulations regarding the use of electric hunting bikes for hunting activities. Some areas may have specific rules or restrictions that you need to be aware of.
